The Paradox of Grace: Why Them and Not Me?

I’ve been sitting with a single word lately, turning it over in my mind: Grace. 

We use this word constantly. When we escape an accident, we call it Grace. When a door opens unexpectedly, we say, God’s Grace. We ask for it daily, almost like it’s the air we breathe. But when you really stop and look at it, I mean really look! the concept starts to feel heavy.

I’ll admit, I like bothering God with the simple questions. I told Him, I know the theological definitions, but speak to me plainly. What is Grace to You? Because if Grace is truly undeserved, it challenges everything we know about fairness.

The Bible gives us names that we associate with divine favor:

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord while the world was falling apart.

Mary was chosen to carry the Messiah.

David found grace and was chosen to become king. 

And so on…

Why them? 

If Grace is a gift you can’t earn, why does it seem to target specific people at specific times? We often try to find a reason in their character, maybe Noah was perfect or Mary was holy but the moment we find a reason why they deserved it, it stops being Grace. Because Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart (1Samuel 16:7).

The Tension of the Undeserved

God desires all to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4).

Grace has appeared to all people (Titus 2:11).

Jesus died for the world (John 3:16).

Grace is the bridge built for the person who has no way to cross. It is the favor given to the person who didn't even know they needed to ask. The difficulty we have with Grace isn't that it's hard to understand; it's that it's hard to accept that it’s not a meritocracy.

Maybe the question isn't Why did they receive it and others didn't? maybe the question is: Are we in good position? For God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. (James 4:6)

Real truth: Grace is not a reward

Grace begins with who God is, not with what we do.

But here is the mystery you’re sensing…

Even though grace is undeserved, the Bible shows that certain hearts position themselves to receive it.

Not by earning, but by posture.

They stay soft toward God.

Grace flows where there is Humility, Surrender, Faith. A heart that says, God, I need You.

Grace falls on all kinds of soil…

Hard soil doesn’t absorb it.

Rocky soil can’t keep it.

Good soil receives it and produces life.

It’s not favoritism, it’s posture.

It is easy to look around and feel like Grace is a spotlight that only shines on certain people. You see others walking in favor and you wonder, why them and not me? But here is the truth: while Grace is undeserved, it is not unreachable. We are all equally unworthy of it, yet Grace is open to every single one of us. If you feel like you are standing in the shadows, it might be time to change your vision. It’s time to stop seeing Grace as something meant only for the others and start adopting a new posture. 

Receiving Grace isn’t about earning it; it’s about positioning yourself to catch it. Think of it like rain: you can’t make it rain, but you can choose to step out from under the roof and into the downpour.

How do we position ourselves?

• Change your thinking, start believing God has willing hearts not favorites.
• Adopt a new vision and look for the small ways Grace is already working in your life. When you acknowledge the small mercies, you open your eyes to the big miracles.
• Prepare your heart. This blog post could be your sign that a new season of grace is available to you… 

When you finally position yourself for the Grace of God, something amazing happens. You stop noticing it only in others. Instead, you begin to realize the things happening in your own life. Your peace, your breakthroughs, your survival are reflections of His hand on you.

And just as you once noticed it in others, the world will start to notice it in you. You won't have to explain it; your life will reflect it. 

Reflect on your posture, and pray for a humble and willing heart ready to receive His grace where you need it most.
